I was thinking about getting a muzzle loader (wife wants to know what I want for x-mas). What's a decent muzzle loader for the first timer?

I'm a traditionalist, so that's the route I'd say take. They claim the Lyman Great Plains Rifles are as close to a genuine Hawken as you can get, from a factory rifle that is. They come with 2 rear sights, adjustable and fixed. Fixed for the primitive shoots that won't allow adj. sights. I shoot mine with the adj., she's a shooter for sure.

Quigley brings up a good point Dave. Do you want to do it the traditional way, or the modern way? From your statement about the the Knight, I'm guessing you're leaning to the more modern way.
If you have a Academy Sports and Outdoors, or other similar type sporting goods store in your area, check it out about mid-late July and see what they have. They carried a Traditions in-line in a complete kit for only $199.00. It came with everything, including a mounted and bore sighted scope, all the tools, and even bullets. The only thing it didn't come with is a sling or powder. It was blued with a synthetic stock. It's a great starter outfit. Once you're hooked, you can pass that one along to wife or child, and upgrade to what you want.

I've got one of the CVA Stahorn kits from Cabelas. 50 cal magnum, 209 primer....don't buy the kit with the scope though, the scope sucks. I dunno what happened, shot the gun like 2 dozen times, went hunting with a ML for the first time....killed a doe and the friggin scope fogged up on the inside.

Renegade,If you can force yourself to go to other forums.LOL. Watch these sites classified ads.A few years ago I found a Knight Disc (the one I've mention) on one of the forums Classified ads. It was a pre 98 with a 22"bbl. S/S and a Advantage camo stock. Bullets, sabots, primers, pellets and misc Knight cleaning accessories plus a hard case.300.00 plus 15 dollars shipping.Granted deals like that don't come everyday. The guy said he only fired it a few times and it was to nice a rifle to let sit in the closet most of the year.He wasn't lying. It looked like brand spanking new. Deals are out there for those who take the time to look.

Renegade Check the shooters suppliers sites and their catalogs. It's much more cost efficient ordering through them.I deal primarily with www.midsouthshooterssupply.com. I have used www.natchezss.com many times. Both give excellent service and quite reasonable. www.Cheaperthandirt.com carries BP rifles comparing prices on other things they aren't cheaper then MS and Natchez.I was at a BassPro a couple weeks ago. They had Knight package deals. I didn't pay any attention to them since I have all the ML's I'll ever need. But they do carry them. Ruger Redhawk
