How do you find your gunsmith and what makes you trust them?

I have a decent smith a half hour away.I knew him from the gun shop I worked at part time.He moved north and I did a few years later. I know from working around him he's good. Not cheap but very good at what he does.I had a falling out with him quite awhile ago.I haven't been back since. If I needed something major done he would be who I would go see. I have another friend who is a machnist. He's been working on my guns.He did some trigger jobs on some of my M-77's. They came out really nice breaking around three pounds. The only problem is he lives 6 hours away.

BT I realize the drive is short. That's not a problem. What had happened I called about a part I needed. A spacer for a Rem 760. His wife works with him.I asked if he had it. Without asking him she says yes. I was ready to head out when I decided to make sure he looked and had it.Mainly to save me a wasted trip.I heard him in the background. Had an nasty attitude. I wanted to buy the part and install it myself. He wanted me to bring the gun so he could put it in and charge me the labor. I don't think so.
I think what started this was a year earlier I needed a gun received and transfered. It was all paid for. All he had to do is receive it.He wanted to charge me 10%.Which would have been over 200.00.I told him forget about it. A few days later he called me and said he would do it for 50.00 . I told him thanks but no thanks.I had a pawn shop that would receive it for 10.00 and it was on it's way already.Oh was he PO.I think that's what started the whole attitude towards me.Apparently he didn't forget this when I needed that part. He's a small shop and I know he has to make a living but to try and take advantage of a old freind and former co worker. I don't think so.If I need something that I can't handle I'll go back up to see him.Until then I'll keep a low profile. After all this time It would probably be forgotten by now.I'm hard headed ,Hell I'm still fighting the Civil War. LOL. It's been about 4-5 years since this happened.
