The Piedmont Hunt Club had our annual Youth Turkey hunt Sat. Mar.26th. 7 youth hunters were sent out with adult guide/callers. I was designated as Standby-Caller since I would be late getting to the club. I arrived and found the hunter and his dad had already entered the gate and gone into the hunt unit. I decided to wait and see what would happen.
Heard 3 shots from the adjoining hunt unit and that crew emerged with a jake. The shooter had taken a shot through some brush and the bird started to run only to have both legs shot out from under him. The 3rd shot was the finisher.
I sat in the truck and had 3 jakes cross the road in front of me. The leader has gone behind some trees, but his tail is viewable ahead of these two:
They went into a cut and crossed the hill and disappeared:
All 3 are viewable here:
The father/son that I was to meet came out about lunch time and had heard a gobbler but the dad wasn't that good a caller that he knew what to do. He demonstrated his calling and I saw why the bird didn't approach.
We had four 1st Turkeys taken (1girl/3 boys) and 3 birds missed (1girl/2 boys) when I left after lunch. Some teams were going back out, but the boy I would have called for was leaving and since my workday starts at 11:30 for the Sunday paper, I didn't stay.
CPiper's son Josh missed a mature bird at less than 10yds that appeared over his left shoulder and shook him up, but that was too close for even a veteran hunter.
The birds will get a rest, until Friday morning Apr/01 when SC Turkey Wars 2005 breaks loose in the piedmont region. I'll be there when I can get there!
