in 2004 ,I met some guys on a hunting forum,as we got to know each other .I invited them down to texas from NC for a turkey/hog/yote hunt.
They got into town on april 22-04 in the afternoon.we decided to go ahead and have a short hunt. so we headed out to one of my honey holes.me and killer got set up on a bird I had dealt with before ,he is young but very wise.we called and called, he gobbled his rear off but hung up around 60 yards.this ended our first hunt together.
we started before sun up the next morning april 23-04,got set up and heard a gobble right away.he came in good and quick killer shot him at about 15 yards.he had a 10" beard 1/2" spurs.
we then moved back to the spot where we were the evening before.sure enough there was old faithful.he gobbled and came on in only thing is instead of coming down the fence like he supposed too,he went right through the fence {which they almost never do} closest he ever got was 55 yards. Now I had tried to get beards to use 3 1/2 #5's but he was shy of the kick.I told him he wouldn't even notice when he shot a bird! but he didn't and when he shot he missed.boy was he mad and of course I didn't remind him of it any for the next few days!
so we're on to the next spot. we saw 5 strutters and a few hens right off the bat,but they were a long ways off and right out in the open! we had to walk about a mile out of the way to get to a creek ,we dropped off in the creek an walked about another half mile to get ahead of them .but when we popped up they were gone.we set up and called anyway and they were coming quick! we all readied not knowing exactly where they would give us the shot.there was one good bird and 2 young ones{one of which had 2 beards}.I told beards to take the good one ,I would take one of the smaller ones.they got to about 25 yards from us and he let the big bird have it.guess what ,he was using 3 1/2's this time! the other 2 birds popped up and landed about 30yards out and I shot! both dropped! but 1 got back up and beards shot him again he fell and as I was going through the fence.the dude got back up and took off! I ran about 200 yards to get a 60 yards shot to finish him off.
it rained all that night, and most of the next morning april 24-04 we hit a few places ,worked a few birds but none were really fired up after all that rain.so we switched to calling yotes,A friend of mine called jeapers joined us. called up 6-7 but even they wouldn't come on in like they should. the closest one hung up at around 350yards.so we decided to hunt hogs .we hunted hard and weren't seeing any sign.as we crossed a creek I noticed fresh sign.I told them to get ready and stick close, but they dallied in the creek and as soon as I popped up there were the hogs! I leveled and fired my 7mm mag and dropped one .I stepped out of the way so everyone else could get a shot.they missed! I sent them back through to hunt some more.while I hauled out my hog.that was about a 1/4 mile jog to the truck.
they saw a few more hogs with no shot and jeapers got bored and killed a poor defenseless critter.
the next day april 25-04 the guys slept in ,I think I hunted them too hard! we hunted everywhere that day and couldn't get an answer.finally around noon we hunted a new spot a bird answered right away.so we got set up! called and called and no answer.I had about decided to quit and move on,when he gobbled again.he was closer ! we called some more and he shut up! so I quit calling and he gobbled ! so I just kept quiet and he couldn't stand it ,man this bird covered some ground.he came in at about 20 yards and beards took him out !
we hunted the rest of the day and me and killer stalked an old tom that just wouldn't cooperate ,a hen gave us up and that ended my hunt with the NC boys.they were good hunters and we had a good time! beards lost 3 pounds in 3 1/2 days ! I bout walked those poor boys to death!
