On our little 2-3 day jaunt of checking out museums, we stumbled on to one that had a primitive camp set up that was part of the park attraction. The boys set up there did a fine job keeping everything "period" correct. Their choice of weapons was the Lyman Great Plains Rifle and one custom kentucky long rifle in .54 caliber. Buckskin clothing and all their possibles were correct, all campware and such. My only gripe about the whole set-up was the charge and powder they used to let the public shoot their rifles with. It just seemed out of place when I walked up and the guy was handing the rifle to a visitor, he explained the set-trigger, told him the sight picture and the guy shot. I was expecting a deep boom like mine, what I heard wasn't much more than a pop! Everything was right but that, including the use of cutting their own patches with patch knife. He was using 25grs. of Pyrodex with that patched ball. We talked after everyone wondered off, his reasoning behind it was cause so many shoot their rifles and that 25grs. was accurate. To me that charge doesn't give them the full picture of shooting those good ole rifles. All the visitors I saw shoot were happy though, guess that's all that counts, mislead, but happy. The only guy I saw hit the target did comment, "that didn't kick at all". We both told him it'll thump ya more if you run 80-100grs. behind that patched ball. Anyway it was a good trip. Guess they have rendevous in Oct. with a shooting match, believe I will journey over there and see what I can do.

Quigs, since you're in the deserted state of Kansas (LOL) you should go to Woolarock. It's just SW of Bartlesville. They've got a primitive camp set up from spring thru fall. They have wild critters roaming the grounds. Buffalo, deer, etc, along with other species penned up for safety. They also have the largest d**n Longhorn steer I've ever seen. Sucker looks like a full sized van with horns. And, the Museum itself is really great if you like western art, mounted animal heads, and firearms. Check it out at: Website doesn't do it justice. www.woolaroc.org/

Oh, by the way, if you ever go there, you'll want to take pictures inside the museum as well as out on the grounds. But they don't allow a flash to be used inside the museum. So take several small exposure rolls. Shoot what you want on the drive into the museum, then change to nighttime film and exp on your camera. Then you can put daylight film back in for the drive out.

Danny, Woolaroc is where we were. Shelly hadn't ever been to that one, so that was one of our stops. Last time I was there they didn't have the primitive camp. I was glad to see it! She also took plenty of pictures inside the museum, she didn't know it but she used flash. She slicked by with it. My favorite has always been the firearms! Was hoping they'd let me take that 1874 Sharps 44-77 home with me, but as you may guess, I came home empty handed! d**n the luck. As for Kansas, guess you're not aware that this is "Gods Country". BTW, thanks for the website. I was gonna have to look it up to see when that rendevous is for sure.
