Season forecast: Deer hunters in the Tar Heel State should expect this year's whitetail hunting season to be similar to last year's campaign predicts North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission biologist Evan Stanford.
The reason for another such prognostication from the deer biologist is due at least in part to the state's burgeoning deer herd and continued strong yearly deer harvest figures including the 140,311 mark set a year ago.
Barring any unforeseen disease issues - the state's Northeastern and Central Coast Plains' deer herd suffered up to 20 percent mortality losses as a result of a hemorrhagic disease flare-up in 2002 - or a late season hurricane strike, another strong deer season should be on tap in the Tar Heel State.
