.357 magnum is pretty good. So is the 41 magnum and the 44 magnum (especially since you can use light 44 special loads to practice with. Anything bigger would also be better.
It boils down to what you're going to hunt with it. And I'd recommend at least a 6 inch barrel as you'll get a little more velocity and range out of it than a 4". Hitting a target with a handgun is not difficult. Precisely placing a handgun's bullet where you want it can be.

I personally put a 41 mag as a min. caliber on deer sized game. Like always shot placement is the key. I agree with Danny get a longer barrel.I like the 7.5". The 9.5" on my SRH is just to heavy.

I use a S&W .357 with a 6.5" barrel! works great but I limit my shots to 50 yds!
