Baiting isn't allowed in NC. In some areas of the state hunters are allowed to run hounds.

No baiting bear in Virginia either. You can use dogs during the chase season.

CloakNDagger how long is your chase season is it worth getting hounds for and is spot and stalk productive in that state?? I have no idea of your forest and how thick things are here we have big logging slashes that the bears feed in..

On my brother-n-laws farm in VaI used to help him bait for black bears. We took and old 55 gal drum and shot it full holes one evening. When we used it to hold the bait. We would fill the barrel half full of apples, we tried bread, cans of dog food just about anything we could think of. One evening when we were using apples we took the drum up the mountain on his four-wheeler and chained it to a tree. We used one piece of a logging chain around the top and a piece around the bottom. We put bolts through the ends of the chains to hold it on the tree. About 4 days later we went to check it and the barrel was gone and both chains were laying at the bottom of the tree. We looked everywhere and couldnt find the barrel. About a month after we lost a 55 gal drum (go figure) my brother-n-law found the barrel about a mile or so down the mountain and it was pressed almost flat. You could see where the bears had been bouncing on the barrel til the top popped off. I guess they really liked "them apples". lol
