Today Gov. Mike Easley signed into law HB 817!! This law allows NC CCH holders to purchase handguns without having to pay a visit to their local sheriff!! NO MORE HANDGUN TAX! Later, Dave

The only reason he signed it, was because it is an election year! And not only that, but Grass Roots North Carolina also had a lot to do with getting the bill to become a reality.

Hand gun tax? They actually tax the gun (other than sales tax)?

I'm guessing(?) what Renegade is saying when you pay a visit to the sheriffs office to get the okay to buy a handgun there is a fee for it.I'm glad HB817 passed for whatever reason it was signed. Here in the Sunshine State we don't have to get permits or okays to purchase any gun except a Class III weapon..Without a CCW there is a waiting period, with a CCW lay your money down and walk out with any gun you buy. There is a 5.00 fee for all call ins with or without a CCW. Ruger Redhawk

There shouldn't be a fee for the call in? It is free if they are chargeing you to call in to the record check that is a free service the Gov. does not charge for this you may want to contact your local ATF office and see why they are chargeing and what can be done I'm guessing(?) what Renegade is saying when you pay a visit to the sheriffs office to get the okay to buy a handgun there is a fee for it.I'm glad HB817 passed for whatever reason it was signed. Here in the Sunshine State we don't have to get permits or okays to purchase any gun except a Class III weapon..Without a CCW there is a waiting period, with a CCW lay your money down and walk out with any gun you buy. Plug for Renegade.I have bought allot of guns down here in Florida over the years. Different dealers, including BassPro shops.Everyone charges a 5.00 fee.BassPro even wants the 5.00 up front in case you're turned down.It must be a fee Florida tacks on.It use to be if you had a CCW they didn't have to call it in. That changed and there is even a 5.00 fee for CCW holders.I'll be willing to bet a state has the option to tack whatever they want on.Oppps to many connections.Let me try this again Ruger Redhawk

Probably a state fee. I know the ATF isn't intereseted. There is no NICS fee, however.
You fellas are making me glad I live in Alabama. No fees, no waiting periods. Fill out the Form 4473, have the NICS done, pay the dealer, and go.

JCalhoun, Samething here if you have a CCW.No waiting period.Fill out the 4473 form, drop your money and walk out with your new toy. After the call in.Sounds like the only difference is the 5.00.Non CCW holders have a 7 or 9 day waiting period.Been so long since I had to wait not sure exactly how long it is. Ruger Redhawk

We don't have one in North Carolinaeithier Sorry RR Well we can't have everything.Florida is pretty lenient with our gun laws.If the only downfall is a 5.00 call in and a waiting period for those who don't have a CCW,I think we're doing okay.remember Florida was the first state to enact the Shall Issue for CCW's back in 1987. I really don't have any complaints with our gun laws.It sure can't compare to Kalifornia,Illinois, NY,MA to name a few. Ruger Redhawk

The $5 fee here in NC was for the sheriff doing esentially a NICS check and typing a letter stating you're a good guy and you can buy a handgun. It didn't matter if you had a conealed carry permit or not, and we still had to wait 3 days(unless you live in a county with an anti-gun sheriff, then it's longer). The reason I called it a tax, was I'm having to pay a fee to some desk jockey to enjoy my 2A rights! And the only thing they do is call NICS! But, that is now HISTORY Now, if this guy named Bill would stop wanting money, my "little" arsenal would be growing on a weekly basis Thanks for the plug Ruger! Later, Dave
