N.C. Senate panel approves bill to use concealed permit to buy pistol
06/15/2004
Associated Press
A Senate judicial committee Tuesday cleared legislation that would allow people with concealed handgun permits to purchase a handgun without requiring additional consent.
The bill would allow the concealed weapons permit to be used in lieu of requiring the buyer to get a handgun permit. A person who gets a concealed handgun permit already goes through a background check and examination by a local sheriff.
A bill sponsor, Rep. Mark Hilton, R-Catawba, said the permit is more thorough then the pistol purchase examination and includes federal background checks.
While there was little opposition from senators on the committee, one lobbyist contends the measure would allow some people to buy a gun even if local law enforcement had concerns about people without a criminal history.
The current law "allows a certain amount of discretion before a pistol could be sold," said Bruce Thompson with North Carolinians Against Gun Violence.
Hilton said sheriffs would still have the authority to keep someone from buying a pistol by simply taking away their concealed handgun permit.
The measure, which passed the House last year, now goes to the Senate Finance Committee because the bill also would create a specialized automobile license plate for enthusiasts of the National Rifle Association.

Dang, sounds like you guys gotta jump through a bunch of hoops up there to get a pistol, here you just buy one, then apply for the concealed Pistol Permit, guess we got it lucky here! Try getting a carry permit in Florida, or Texas, Florida makes you pay for a FBI background check, then it's 125 bucks a year , thank God it's only 15 bucks here, and if you are a law abiding member of society, then no problemo, just go to the sheriff's office, course I got a Auxillary Police Badge, and am an auxillary cop so I don't have to wait to get a pistol, I just pick it out and walk out the door with it! Roll Tide! Lee

Lee Backstrap, a small correction. Unless it's different for non resident Florida CCW holders. My CCW has to be renewed every 5 years and it's 65.00. Maybe out of state does cost more I don't know. Mine's due to be renewed in November. If you have a valid CCW you're exempt from waiting periods on gun purchases. They still have to call it in @ 5.00 a pop. Ruger Redhawk

If I remember correctly a Florida non-resident permit costs $119 and is good for 5yrs. Doesn't Alabama have a waiting period before the purchase of a pistol is completed? Jumping through hoops? Try getting a pistol in NY city!!
Later,
Dave
