I have one of these. Just wondering if anyone else had one that jammed with certain types of ammo? If I use the winchester ballistic tip I have no problem (but I don't like their shells )If I use the same shell in federal it jams. I do need to clean the gas cartridge but has anyone else ever had this same problem?

I had one of these. It was my first high-powered rifle. I always used Remington ammo and never had any trouble. It was one of the best shooting rifles i've ever owned.

BT not to burst your bubble. Unfortunately the Remington semi autos have been given the name Jam-masters or Jam -o- matics. Over the years I had two of them. They were never very reliable. Notice I said had. Both were 30-06's.On another big hunting forum there has been allot of complaints about these 740's 742's and 7400's.It's unfortunate because they are a nice rifle. Some people even started calling them a single shot knowing they might not get a second shot off.Apparently Remington knows there is a problem with them. I haven't seen where they've made any corrections.Once in awhile a good one slips through but they are few and far between. If you want a semi auto rifle invest in a Browning BAR.They are expensive but worth the extra money. I might add that the gas chamber needs to be clean. Lubricate sparingly. In extremely cold weather I would recommend using a dry lubricant.Dri Slide or graphite.

Ruger Redhawk I also have a Browning Bar 7mm mag. Belgium made I do need to clean the gas chamber a gunsmith once told me that is the biggest problems with those models. But I only notice it when I use federal, remington ammunition. If I use the winchesters I have no problem what so ever I have been wondering if maybe the winchester shell is cased slightly different because I have no problem with that shell. May have to do some investigating

I never had a jamming problem with my 742 but other than zeroing it in but I never fired it more than once at a time. Maybe I didnt fire it fast enough for it to jam. If your not happy with it BT give me a call.

BT you have a Browning so you know the difference in the quality.I have a couple of the fancy BAR's unfired. One is a 300 Win Mag and the other is a 270 w/boss. Before my mother passed away I would visit her in Cincinnati every year. There is a BassPro shop there. Driving up I was thinking if BP has the then new BAR Stalkers I might see about picking one up.Naturally the saleman hadn't a clue. Finally he started showing me all the BAR's. Yep they had them. The BP reg price was 659.00 on sale for 599.00. I filled out a BassPro Credit Card application and got another 10% off.I ended up buying a 270 and a 30-06 for 539.00 each. That's probably pretty close to what a Remington 7400 costs now days I would imagine. This last season I carried the 270 for a day or so. To heavy for my liking.I broke out my Remington 700 in 270.I guess you can tell I like the 270 Win for a deer cartridge. That BassPro deal was back at Christmas of 01 . So the prices have most likely gone up on the BAR'S.I thought I got a super deal. I'm not overly crazy about the 30-06 cartridge but the price was right. I saw the exact same gun at a sporting goods store in Illinois the next week. It was right at 700.00. I felt good walking out of the sporting goods store.Knew I done good Ruger Redhawk

I was talking with my dad today on the phone about my 742 30.06 I used to have. He agreed with Ruger Redhawk about this gun. He did remember that I didnt have any trouble with mine but he said that I must have been lucky. He also said that some of his friends have these guns and they have trouble with accuracy on top on the jamming. He said that they have trouble holding a pattern when shooting. Which could be the shooter's fault but then again it could be the gun too.

Ahhhhh Smart man your father Bucknrut Ol'e Ruger doesn't speak with a forked tongue. My first 742 was a carbine model. I traded stupid me a nice looking Alpine Rifle in 243 for it. That's when I was first learning about guns.. We bickered back and forth. I finally got his scope with it. It was a cheap scope. All I remember it was called a Red Arrow. Then a guy who used to come in the gunshop all the time won one in a raffle. It was a 742 ADL. Unfired NIB. If I remember right I gave him a buck and a half for it.I shot them a few times and was never impressed with them. I forget what I did with the first one. Probably traded it in.The second one I sold. I put a older Redfield scope on it and got 450.00 or 500.00 for it. That was about 8 years or so ago. A women wanted it for her husband. Not sure if he shot her with it or not . All I can say I hope he did in one shot. :)He might not have gotten a second shot. Remington's used to be a great gun. Over the last several years their quality and customer service has really slipped. One Remington I would like to have is a 7600 pump. Nice rifles. I have a old 760 in 30-06. It's such a early model it wasn't even drilled and tapped for a scope.A customer wanted it sent to Remington to be basically rebuilt. When it came back and he was given the bill he said forget it.I talked to the owner of the GS and picked it up for about 125.00.When I lived in South Florida we had 3 wheelers (going back aways) we used in the Everglades. I regret it now but I had the barrel cut down to about 17.5" for using on the 3 wheeler. It still shoots good even with the lost of velocity. I've laid a deer or two down with it.Pretty much now the only rifle that catch my interest are Ruger M-77's.If I'm looking for a semi auto it will have to be a BAR.It's worth the extra money especially if you've spent a fortune on a hunt and the gun causes you to miss a trophy. This shell Winchester Ballistic Silvertip 168gr SBST3006A is the one That I do not have a problem with but I have found that this particular shell is made of some alumien (dont think it is spelled right) and the medal which makes the case a little softer that may be the reason in which it shoots well in this gun any thats may take no scientific proof just my thoughts

The only aluminum cases I know of are Blazers by CCI.l Wolf uses a steel case which will never be fired in any of my guns. Maybe Winchester's brass is a little softer. Now that my Ruger M-77 has had several rounds put through it I'm going to try the Federal Ballistic tips again. It might have needed a little breaking in before it would shoot them well. I bought a couple boxes of Winchester Supreme 150 gr.If the Ballistic Tips don't work maybe the Supremes will. There is nothing wrong with the Remington CoreLokts. So if I have to stick with them it won't be any hard feelings.

the supremes is what I am shooting in the .06 the caseing on mine are not brass but silver/chrome and I think they are a little softer ahhhhh I know what you have they are Nickel plated Brass. The same as 357 mags and 38 spl are. They don't corrode like brass does.Especially if kept in leather.Have you ever noticed when brass is kept in a leather belt with cartridge loops they turn green? The nickel plating prevents most of this corroding. Ruger Redhawk
